I recently visited the Dominguez-Escalante National Conservation Area (aka “Escalante Canyon”) for an afternoon of photography. The temperature was 95f/35c: it was HOT! I had a cooler of drinks packed with ice–I drank my way into the canyon and drank my way out. While there, I walked along a dry river bed admiring the rock show; so many kinds of rocks and geology!
When I stopped to drink my lemonade, I noticed a fossilized vertebra by my foot. I imagine the canyon is replete with fossils, minerals, and old cattle bones.
