We have been hearing a particular bird call in the mornings and evenings, so we have been more attentive to who is in the sky and in the trees. Our new resident is a Cooper’s Hawk; a clever barnstormer that can traverse dense branches and ambush unknowing prey. Three hawks have taken command of our airspace, watching our chickens. This morning, as I was scattering feed for the chickens, a Cooper’s Hawk dove down from the high branches narrowly missing me by inches. It did this twice as the chickens were around my feet. I was deeply impressed with its agility and focus–and glad it did not attack me!
