I celebrated seeing these two brave boys bouncing a ball in the street in between cars. They were happy to play barefoot on the hot pavement together. All smiles. All laughter. Both boys took the time to spot cars, and all drivers drove carefully through their game.

School starts next week. They’ll have to wear shoes (with socks!), jeans, and a t-shirt. They’ll return to books, iPads, indoor basketball, and instructors tapping on white boards with red markers.

But I will remember for them, in case they forget, that they did summer right. Youthful abandon. A game in every ball. An acceptance in every friend.
